Bluesky video downloader not working: causes and fixes

Last updated:

A Bluesky download fails when the post is deleted or blocked, when the author has turned on “discourage apps from showing my account to logged-out users”, or when the video is inside a quoted post. Open the quoted post and copy its own link. Freshly uploaded videos may need a minute to finish processing.

Causes and fixes

What you seeWhyWhat to do
“The author chose not to show their posts…”The author asked apps not to show their account to logged-out people. We respect that setting, so these posts can’t be downloaded.
“Post not found”Deleted post, or a block between accounts.Only visible public posts work.
“No video, image or GIF”The video is in the quoted post, not in this one.Tap the quoted post and copy its link.
Download fails right after postingBluesky is still processing the upload.Wait a minute and try again.
Custom domain handleHandles like name.com are fine. They work like any other link.

General checks

  • Copy the link of the post itself, not of the profile, the board or the home feed.
  • Paste the whole link. Extra text around it is fine: the tool finds the link.
  • Make sure the post is public: open it in a private browser window without logging in. If you can’t see it there, no downloader can.
  • Seeing “Too many requests”? Wait one minute and try again.
  • If the post loads but the download button does nothing on iPhone, check Files → Downloads: the file is often already there.

Questions

Why do Bluesky videos come out in original quality?

We download the file the author uploaded, not the stream, so you get one MP4 with sound.

Do I need a Bluesky account?

No. Bluesky’s public API is open to everyone.
