How to download social media videos on Windows and Mac
Last updated:
To download a video on a computer: copy the post’s link from the address bar or the Share menu, paste it on VidFinch and click Download, then “Download video”. The file goes to your Downloads folder. It works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, with nothing to install.
Step by step
- Open the post in your browser. Copy the link from the address bar, or use the post’s Share → Copy link.
- Go to vidfinch.com, click the box and press Ctrl+V (Windows) or ⌘+V (Mac).
- Click Download, then “Download video” (or image / GIF).
- Open the file from the browser’s download bar, or from your Downloads folder.
Where to copy the link on each site
| Platform | Where to copy the link | The link looks like |
|---|---|---|
| X (Twitter) | Share icon under the post → Copy link | x.com/user/status/1234… |
| Threads | Share (paper-plane icon) → Copy link | threads.com/@user/post/C9x… |
| Share → Copy link | pin.it/AbC… or pinterest.com/pin/1234… | |
| Bluesky | Share → Copy link to post | bsky.app/profile/name/post/3k… |
| “…” on the post → Copy link to post | linkedin.com/posts/…-activity-1234… | |
| Snapchat | Share on a Spotlight → Copy link | snapchat.com/spotlight/… or t.snapchat.com/… |
Find your downloads
| Browser | Shortcut to open downloads |
|---|---|
| Chrome / Edge (Windows) | Ctrl+J |
| Chrome (Mac) | ⌘+Shift+J |
| Firefox | Ctrl+Shift+Y (Windows) / ⌘+Shift+Y (Mac) |
| Safari (Mac) | ⌘+Option+L |
Playing the file
MP4 files play in the default player on Windows (Media Player) and Mac (QuickTime).
A few platforms keep the file exactly as it was uploaded, which can be MOV or WebM. If your player refuses it, VLC (free) plays everything.
If something doesn’t work
- Copy the link of the post itself, not of the profile, the board or the home feed.
- Paste the whole link. Extra text around it is fine: the tool finds the link.
- Make sure the post is public: open it in a private browser window without logging in. If you can’t see it there, no downloader can.
- Seeing “Too many requests”? Wait one minute and try again.
- If the post loads but the download button does nothing on iPhone, check Files → Downloads: the file is often already there.
Questions
Do I need a browser extension?
No. Extensions can read every page you visit; VidFinch works without one.
Does it work on Chromebook and Linux?
Yes. Any modern browser works.
Can I choose where files are saved?
Yes, in your browser settings (Downloads → Location), or turn on “Ask where to save each file”.
