How to save a GIF from Twitter (X)
Last updated:
To save a GIF from X (Twitter), copy the post link (Share → Copy link), paste it into the VidFinch Twitter GIF Downloader and tap Download, then Download GIF. X has no save button for GIFs and stores them as MP4 videos, so VidFinch turns the MP4 into a real .gif in your browser. You can also keep the MP4.
Step by step
- In the X app or on x.com, open the post with the GIF.
- Tap Share (the arrow icon) → Copy link.
- Open the VidFinch Twitter GIF Downloader and paste the link.
- Tap Download, then Download GIF. To keep the original video instead, tap Download video (MP4).
Why X GIFs download as MP4
When someone posts a GIF, X converts it into a short, silent MP4 loop. Video files are many times smaller than GIFs, so timelines load faster. That is why most tools give you an .mp4 file when you save a “GIF” from X.
The MP4 is the original file X keeps and has the best quality. You only need a .gif when the place you post to expects one: a forum, Slack, Discord, an email or a slide.
Where the file goes
| Device | Where to find it | To put it in your gallery |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone / iPad | Files app → Downloads | Open it, tap Share → Save Image (GIF) or Save Video (MP4) |
| Android | Downloads folder | It shows up in Google Photos or the Gallery |
| Windows / Mac | Downloads folder | Open it in any browser or image viewer |
If it doesn’t work
- Copy the link of the post itself (it contains /status/), not the profile.
- GIFs from protected (private) accounts can’t be downloaded.
- If the post was deleted or is hidden from logged-out visitors, it can’t be saved.

Questions
Can I save a GIF inside the X app?
No. X lets you bookmark or share a post, but it has no option to save a GIF to your device.
Why is the GIF bigger than the MP4?
GIF is an old format that stores every frame as a full picture. The same loop is usually several times smaller as an MP4.
Can I save GIFs from private accounts?
No. Only GIFs in public posts can be downloaded.
Does the GIF keep its quality?
The GIF is made from the original MP4, up to 480 px wide at 12 frames per second, which matches how most X GIFs look. For the exact original, keep the MP4.
